The bustling city of Mbale, nestled at the foot of Mount Elgon, came alive with energy, excitement, and purpose as the 4th Elgon Half Marathon kicked off at exactly 8:00 a.m. at the Cricket Grounds. The event which happened on 1st November 2025 drew hundreds of participants, ranging from professional athletes to enthusiastic amateurs, all united by one goal to run for impact.
This year’s marathon was graced by Uganda’s own world champion and Olympic gold medalist, Joshua Cheptegei, who served as the Chief Runner. His presence not only inspired the crowd but also reminded everyone of the power of sports in bringing people together for a greater cause. With his characteristic humility and passion, Cheptegei flagged off the races, setting the tone for what would be a day of endurance, unity, and social advocacy.
Three Races, Three Causes
The marathon featured three main race categories : the 21km, 10km, and 5km runs, each built around a meaningful social theme aimed at driving awareness and inspiring action.
The 21km race was dedicated to Climate Action, calling on participants to champion environmental sustainability. As runners pounded the streets of Mbale, they carried a strong message about protecting the planet. From reducing plastic waste to planting trees, the theme served as a timely reminder of the urgent need for collective action in the face of climate change. The scenic route, with panoramic views of the lush Mount Elgon slopes, further emphasized the importance of preserving Uganda’s natural beauty.

The 10km race shone a spotlight on Youth Empowerment. This category aimed to encourage young people to rise above challenges and chase their dreams, both on and off the track. The energy and enthusiasm of the youth participants were infectious, a true reflection of Uganda’s vibrant and determined generation. Through the marathon, organizers sought to inspire young people to see sports not just as competition, but as a path to discipline, resilience, and opportunity.
The 5km fun run focused on Gender-Based Violence Awareness, an issue that continues to affect communities across the region. By dedicating a race to this theme, the marathon created space for open conversations about prevention, support, and equality. Families, schools, and community groups joined hands in solidarity, running together to raise awareness and advocate for safer spaces for all.
A Celebration of Sport, Community, and Purpose
